Breeding sheet: Praying mantis Omomantis zebrata

Difficulty:

Average. An accessible mantis, but one that will require careful humidity control to successfully molt. It's also a heat-loving mantis, so be careful. Note that domestic room temperature may be sufficient if it's at least 20°C.

Temperature :

24-28°C, with possible nighttime variations down to 22°C to simulate its natural environment.

Humidity:

60-70%. A light mist can be used to maintain this humidity, especially during moulting periods.

Food :

  • Juveniles : Small insects such as fruit flies or micro-crickets.
  • Adults : Crickets, cockroaches, flies, or small grasshoppers. Choose prey appropriate for their size to avoid injury.

Reproduction mode:

The reproduction of the Omomantis zebrata is sexual. After mating, the female lays oothecae (egg capsules) that can contain several dozen eggs. Incubation lasts approximately 4 to 6 weeks, depending on temperature and humidity.

Character :

  • Juveniles : Active and curious, they like to explore their habitat.
  • Adults : Calm and mainly stationary, except during hunting season.

Lifetime :

  • Juveniles : 4 to 5 months to reach their adult size.
  • Adults : 4 to 6 months after maturity, depending on breeding conditions.

Size :

  • Juveniles : From a few millimeters to 2 cm depending on their stage.
  • Adults : 4 to 6 cm, with a slim and elegant silhouette.

Breeder's Note:

A species with two major advantages: First, like all African mantises, it is very active. Not as active as the Hierodula, which are the champions of aggression/hunting, but it remains superb to observe.

Then it offers a livery, a color, truly unique. In this respect it is perhaps my favorite praying mantis. I hope the photos do it justice, it has zebra stripes not only on the wings but also on the body, even going as far as the outline of the eyes. It is very atypical.

Remember, to be successful, the purchase of the praying mantis Omomantis zebrata must be accompanied by a suitable habitat and careful monitoring. You are responsible for this little life ;)
