Red Runner Cockroach - Live food for praying mantises and carnivorous insects

!!!Sold in boxes of 30 individuals. Enough to start a colony for a young mantis that will follow it throughout its life under good conditions!!!

The Red Runner Cockroach ( Blatta lateralis ) may not look like your average supermodel, but in the world of insect feeders, it's a force to be reckoned with. Lively, hardy, and prolific, it has become a staple for reptile and insect hobbyists.

Usefulness beyond just a meal

Some people (including me!) even find a certain pleasure in observing these little creatures in action. Their gregarious behavior, their rapid movements, and their adaptability make them fascinating subjects of observation. Wait until you see the gold rush when you feed them carrots, wait until you see your first temporarily albino cockroaches that are entirely white, wait until you see your females carrying around egg cases the size of small peas, wait until you see...

In summary?

Whether you are a hobbyist breeder, an arthropod owner, or simply curious to experiment with insect farming, the Red Runner Cockroach ticks all the boxes:

  • Nutritious and balanced food for your animals.
  • Simple and quick breeding.
  • Discreet, clean (well... relatively clean haha) and efficient.

It's time to add these little sprinters to your collection. They won't disappoint your insects or your curiosity.

Breeding Sheet: Red Runner Cockroach ( Blatta lateralis )

📊 Difficulty Level: Easy++. Perhaps the simplest of all arthropods. Breeding them incorrectly is almost impossible. This marvel can survive in any temperature or humidity, eating anything, even cardboard. Raise the temperature a little, and spawning begins automatically.

🌡️ Temperature:

  • Day: 25-30°C ideally but tolerates 16-35°C very well.
  • Night: 20-24°C

💧 Humidity:

  • Humidity: 40-60%. This is the humidity of the ambient air in a house.
  • Tip: Maintain moderate humidity to prevent mold, but ensure good ventilation of the breeding tank.

🥬 Food:

  • Main diet: Fresh fruits and vegetables (carrots, apples, sweet potatoes). Carrots and cat food drive them crazy.
  • Proteins: Cat/dog kibble, specialized insect food.
  • Frequency: Renew food every 2 to 3 days to prevent decomposition.

🐞 Reproduction mode:

  • Type: Sexual reproduction.
  • Laying: Females produce oothecae (egg sacs) regularly.
  • Incubation: Eggs hatch after 3 to 5 weeks , depending on temperature and humidity.
  • Tip: Keep egg cases in a warm, slightly humid environment to maximize hatching.

😌 Behavior:

  • Young Red Runner Cockroaches: Active, fast and discreet.
  • Adults: Very agile, they prefer dark areas and move quickly if disturbed.
  • Special feature: Unlike other species, the Red Runner Cockroach does not climb on smooth surfaces, which limits accidental escapes.

⌛ Lifespan:

  • Young: 2 to 3 months before sexual maturity.
  • Adults: 3 to 6 additional months, depending on breeding conditions.

📏 Size:

  • Adult: About 2 to 3 cm long.

🏠 Breeding Tips:

  • Choose a well-ventilated breeding tank to avoid mold.
  • Place hiding places (egg cartons, pieces of cardboard) to reduce stress for Red Runner Cockroaches .
  • Maintain a constant source of food and water. Ideally, water should be given in gel form; I've never personally done this. I give them liquid water, which I pour in small amounts along the walls every other day. It works perfectly.
  • Avoid temperatures that are too low to ensure optimal reproduction. This starts at 23-25.

📝 Breeder's Note:

    • A species that is mainly used to feed others. However, the cockroach is a fascinating arthropod, ultra resistant, capable of feeding on anything and practically immortal, notably with the ability to regrow its limbs. A red runner cockroach can even survive several weeks without its head! You should know a little secret: "blatte" means "cockroach", the general public often ignores this. A species that we don't really like, but give it a chance, even under the pretext of serving as a snack for your mantis, and it will surprise you.
