🦗 Breeding Sheet: Praying Mantis Prohierodula picta

Difficulty: Easy++. One of the simplest mantises, it is always hungry and pursues its prey even on the ground. It is not too demanding of humidity either.

Temperature: 24-30°C
Humidity: 50-60%

Food :
The praying mantis (Prohierodula picta) feeds primarily on live insects such as flies, cockroaches, and small grasshoppers. Make sure the prey is appropriate for the individual's size.

Reproduction mode:
In the praying mantis Prohierodula picta, reproduction is sexual. Females lay oothecae, structures containing eggs. The young, active from the moment they hatch, require a varied and regular diet.

Character :
The praying mantis Prohierodula picta has a rather edgy temperament. It is very active compared to other species such as the Deroplatys Desireccata for example.

Lifetime :
6 to 12 months after hatching.

Size :

  • Females: 8-9 cm
  • Males: 6-7 cm

Breeder's Note:
Quite simply my favorite mantis, by far. She is the very embodiment of the praying mantis in the collective imagination: an unparalleled killer.
Unlike most mantises, this one will chase its prey and even, very rarely, jump on its prey. Literally. Whereas most mantises remain static, waiting for prey to pass by.

If you're looking to buy a large, highly active predatory praying mantis, consider the Prohierodula Picta. Note that all "Hierodula" praying mantises generally display the same traits, although they are more pronounced in the Prohierodula picta.
