Breeding sheet: Stick insect Heteropteryx dilatata

Difficulty : Medium. This stick insect presents two breeding challenges. The first is its size and robustness. It is truly a massive stick insect at its adult size, as females can measure up to 20 cm.
Then it is a stick insect which can pinch with its spurs, the "needles" on the front of the hind legs (see image)

And he won't hold back if he feels threatened. So, nothing insurmountable, handle him gently and everything will be fine. However, I don't recommend it for young audiences, or under adult supervision.

Last difficulty: It only reproduces sexually, unlike many stick insects you will necessarily need a male and a female to have fertilization and perpetuate the cycle.

Temperature : 22-26°C

Humidity : 70-80%

Food : The Heteropteryx dilatata stick insect feeds mainly on brambles , oak , hazel , rose and other similar foliage. Always make sure to provide it with fresh leaves.

Reproduction : Sexual reproduction. The female lays eggs after mating, which can take 4 to 6 months to hatch depending on incubation conditions (high humidity and temperature recommended).

Personality : A calm stick insect, but it can become agitated if threatened. It will then raise both hind legs, ready to bite. It is not very mobile during the day, preferring to remain still and camouflage itself. Females are more robust and imposing, while males are more slender and agile.

Lifetime :

  • Nymph : about 6 months
  • Adult : 1 to 2 years

Size :

  • Female : up to 15 cm
  • Male : about 10 cm

Breeder's Note : An exceptional stick insect due to its robustness and splendid color in the female. There are larger stick insects, but rarely any "bigger." However, this should be reserved for adults.
